WMP Excellence Awards – Categories

If you know of a deserving police officer, PCSO, police staff, special constable, volunteer or team who deserve to be recognised then this is your chance to show what they mean to you. The judges will be particularly looking out for nominees who have embraced the force’s values:
- Service
- Integrity
- Compassion
- Professionalism
- Equality, diversity & human rights
So if you know an individual, or team that deserves to be recognised, and would like to make a nomination you can do so in one of two ways.

Nomination Categories
Bravery Award
Celebrates those who have shown outstanding bravery in the course of carrying out their duties. (team or individual).
The Chris Johnson Driving Diversity Award
For individual or teams who have made significant progress in improving our culture in terms of equality, diversity and inclusion. Named in honour of a former Assistant Chief Constable.
Criminal Justice and Victim Care Award
For those who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to excellence in the pursuit of justice and/or the support of victims of crime.
The Barrie Simpson Investigator of the Year
For individuals or teams who have carried out complex investigations and have achieved exceptional results. In memory of Detective Superintendent Barrie Simpson. Any member of the force who has displayed excellent investigative skills, including personal and professional resilience during an investigation, the use of innovative methods of investigation, the coordination of large-scale investigation and the appropriate identification and support of vulnerable victims and witnesses. Entries should be based on a case that has now been finalised through the court process, although findings and sentencing will not have a negative bearing on the judging process.
Police Officer of the Year
For those who have exemplified our values of courage, compassion, integrity, and professionalism going above and beyond what’s expected to make a significant contribution to policing.
Police Community Support Officer of the Year
Individuals will be judged on their personal skills, how they add value to policing their communities through listening, recording and solving community issues and how the force benefits from the high-quality community intelligence they bring.

Police Staff of the Year
For those who have exemplified our values of courage, compassion, integrity and professionalism going above and beyond what’s expected to make a significant contribution to policing.
Special Constabulary Award
For those who have exemplified our values of courage, compassion, integrity and professionalism going above and beyond what’s expected to make a significant contribution to policing.
Volunteer of the Year
For members of the public who have made an extraordinary contribution through a single act of bravery or a sustained contribution to their community.
The Andrew Le Comte Memorial Award for Inspirational Leadership
In remembrance of PC Andrew Stephen Le Comte, who was killed on 4 February 1984, aged 21, during a fall whilst searching for suspects on a shop roof at night. The winner will have inspired others with a passion for policing, allowing others to achieve and reach their potential while offering outstanding leadership skills.
The Police and Crime Commissioner’s Community Thank You Award
Awarded to an individual or group who have worked with the police, providing assistance through local initiatives such as watch or community groups.
Student Officer of the Year
To recognise student officers, including new special constables, who have made an immediate impact, shown exceptional commitment, a passion for policing and demonstrated the force values.
Cadet of the Year
Any police cadet who has successfully and consistently supported force priorities in the last year and has gone above and beyond what would normally be expected of them.
Problem Solving Award
- Identifying a significant issue or community priority affecting some aspect of policing in WMP.
- Applied a problem-solving approach to devise an innovative means of addressing the issue, using problem solving tools to clearly evidence each stage of the project.
- The nominee will consult a range of sources to inform the solution.
- The impact of the project can be measured in a quantitative or qualitative methodology and a clear change can be seen following the implementation of the solution on either the force, community or partner organisations.
- The solution involves a level of collaboration either internally or externally.
- The solution delivered in line with the force objectives, Code of Ethics or helped deliver cost saving for the organisation.
- Good practice was shared, either across the organisation or externally.
Team of the Year
For those who have made a significant overall achievement to operational policing and have achieved exceptional results in reducing crime while building trust and confidence in the community.
